Beaches in Motion, 2011-2015
Photographs capture a crisp, single point in time. True, but sometimes it is more interesting to capture many points in time by placing the camera on a sturdy tripod and leaving the shutter open for a while. This is possible using slow film/sensor speeds (e.g., ISO 50), using neutral density filters, and/or using small apertures (e.g., f/64 with a view camera). Here are some of the results that are possible. The motions of the waves, the checkered flags, and especially of the kite become painterly.
